Mild and buttery, with a fresh fruity flavor, Merula is a delicious extra virgin olive oil perfect for salads and dipping in bread. First cold pressed within hours of picking, this olive oil is full of healthful vitamins and antioxidants. Merula is the name of a local yellow-beaked blackbird that is common on the estate of the Marques de Valdueza where the olives are grown. The attractive tin won a first place Mobius Award for design.
This extra virgin olive oil is a coupage, blending several varieties to create a balanced flavor. Along with buttery Arbequina, tangy Picual, smooth and fruity Hojiblanca, which are common to many Spanish blends, oil from Morisca olives is added, which are unique to Extremadura, in western Spain.
The exquisite combination of these four varietals creates a delicious fragrance, a fresh fruitiness and a round, mild taste with just a hint of pepper.
The family estate is near Merida, close to the border with Portugal. This area was one of the farthermost provinces of the Roman Empire and has produced excellent olive oil for over 2,000 years.
