Bright and colorful with black seeds, the rocoto pepper is best known for its bold, spicy flavor. This exotic hot pepper is native to the region surrounding the Andes Mountains and can be used in any recipe calling for hot peppers.
These peppers have a firm texture and complex flavor. While spicy, there is an undertone of tropical fruits like mangos and papayas.
Legend tells us that rocotos (also known as locotos) were cultivated and used 5,000 years ago by the Incas, Aymaras and Quechuas. Still grown in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, they are full of antioxidants and Vitamin C.
Thick-walled and shaped like a small apple, rocoto peppers are sometimes called manzano peppers in American markets. Bright red in color, they can be eaten on their own (if you have a high tolerance for spicy foods) or used whole or puréed in a variety of sauces and dishes that require hot peppers.
