Curtido Salvadoreño is the famous condiment, a tangy coleslaw with an impressive kick! It is typically served with hot pupusas, the meat or cheese stuffed thick tortillas that are El Salvador's most famous dish. We also enjoy it with hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches and chicken as well.
Most homes in El Salvador make their own fresh curtido, and this recipe is based on the typical homemade version. Chopped cabbage, sliced carrots and onion and whole jalapeño peppers are jarred with vinegar until all the ingredients are suitably tangy and spicy. Store this jar in the refrigerator and serve at a moment's notice!
