This handmade, black tableware finds its home and roots in La Chamba, Colombia, where the craft originated centuries ago. Each piece is a result of an intricate process mastered by local artisans who burnish the dishes by hand to uniform smoothness using semiprecious stones; they then fire it for 3 hours. La Chamba cookware develops its characteristic black color from the smoke of natural materials added to the furnace.

Pieces may have slight imperfections in the form or finish due to their handmade nature, but many believe that these 'imperfections' are what gives each piece its distinct qualities. Aesthetics and or functionality are never affected by variations.

Care of La Chamba Cookware

La Chamba cookware should be hand washed only. Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge to cleanse. A brief soak will help with heavily soiled cookware. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or soaking for long periods.

Cure the black clay pitcher before its first use to seal the pores. Fill the pitcher with water and place it in a 400 degree Fahrenheit oven for 30 minutes. If you would like to follow the more traditional curing process, rub the piece inside and out with a ripe plantain, leaving a thick coating before boiling.

Allow cookware to adjust to changes in temperature slowly and don’t place hot dishes on cold surfaces.
