"Powerful yet seductive. This red shows muscular, almost bruising, tannins, but balances them with rich layers of blackberry, olive, tobacco, espresso and mineral, remaining lively, even graceful on the palate. May improve. Best after 2008. 250 cases made." - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator
THE PRODUCER: In the constant pursuit of excellence, the Muga family decided to make a new wine to exhibit the power of Tempranillo and Graciano as well as showcase their best and oldest vineyards. With the renowned vintage of 2000, they produced Aro. The Aro wine comes from the best old vines, which are all located on southeast slopes in the Valley of the Rio Oja in Rioja Alta.
Mr. Isaac Muga opened his first cellar in 1932. At his death in 1969, his sons Manuel and Isaac took over the management and winemaking of the winery. This is the only winery left in Spain that uses only oak throughout the process of its production. The Muga family continues to maintain their own cooperage and directly imports American and French oak in order to custom make their barrels. The family estate consists of 96 acres (40 hectares) and supplements their production with grapes from 50 different small growers; some of them have less than one hectare, from 40-50 year-old vines. The majority of grapes are from Rioja Alta. (close)
