- Lush and creamy
- Deep and layered flavor
- Aromas of oak, mineral and spice
96 points - "Glass-staining purple. Jaw-droppingly perfumed bouquet of candied cherry, blackcurrant, pipe tobacco, dark chocolate, minerals and Asian spices. There's a seductively mineral-driven quality to the vibrant fruit that reminded me of Chateau Ausone. Sweet cassis and blackberry flavors overwhelm the palate and pick up candied flowers, cinnamon and mocha with time in the glass. As lush and creamy as this wine is, there is excellent mineral spine to add focus to the endlessly sweet, spicy finish. If I could find or afford this, I'd be all over it. There were just 250 cases made of this wine, which is a selection from the property's oldest vines." -Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, September/October 2008. (more info)

It is then aged for 18 months in new French oak. Purple/black in color, the wine’s legs ooze slowly down the glass. Aromas of toasty new oak, mineral, spice box, incense, and blackberry are followed by a muscular, back-strapping infant of a wine with huge fruit, flavor, and structure. Deep, layered, and nearly impenetrable, it will require a minimum of a decade of cellaring. Do not think of touching a bottle before 2015 and then enjoy it through 2030. It is a true vin de garde." -Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, #183, June 2009. ABOUT THE PRODUCER: In the constant pursuit of excellence, the Muga family decided to make a new wine to exhibit the power of Tempranillo and Graciano as well as showcase their best and oldest vineyards. With the renowned vintage of 2000, they produced Aro. The Aro wine comes from the best old vines, which are all located on southeast slopes in the Valley of the Rio Oja in Rioja Alta. Mr. Isaac Muga opened his first cellar in 1932. At his death in 1969, his sons Manuel and Isaac took over the management and winemaking of the winery. This is the only winery left in Spain that uses only oak throughout the process of its production. The Muga family continues to maintain their own cooperage and directly imports American and French oak in order to custom make their barrels. The family estate consists of 96 acres (40 hectares) and supplements their production with grapes from 50 different small growers; some of them have less than one hectare, from 40-50 year-old vines. The majority of grapes are from Rioja Alta. (close) |
