Spain boasts some of the world's finest wines, from bold, stunning Tempranillos to Garnachas full of intense dark fruit. With the thousands of wines available from Spain, we decided to identify a selection of the very best. We sought the help of an experienced taster as a guide as we explored the world of premium Spanish wines (someone had to do it!) and finally arrived at this delicious collection.
Our goal is to offer a tour of memorable wines from a variety of regions and vintages so that you and your friends can experience the very best of the Spanish tradition. Our family gathered several times to taste and enjoy dozens of wines, and we agreed that these six are a vibrant representation of Spain's finest. So uncork a bottle or two, we guarantee you will discover some exceptional wines!
Each sampler comes with tasting notes and a chrome shell wine stopper.
The following wines are included in this wine sampler:
LAR DE PAULA RESERVA
Meruelo family winery brings you this old-world red from the Rioja region. Twenty-four months in French and American oak and at least another eighteen before being released to the market, this traditional Spanish reserva from Rioja Alavesa offers rich fruit with the rustic edge we expect from Spain. Uncork this beauty now or opt to lay it down for another ten years. Whatever you do, we know you’ll relish every sip!
ESCUDO DE PLATA GRAN RESERVA
The Monastrell vines rub shoulders with olive groves and almond trees in the arid climate of Jumilla, Spain, where Bodegas Fernandez has been crafting fine wines since 1920. With a penetrating ruby hue and wild cherry aromas, this Gran Reserva wine shares hints of vanilla and cedar on the palate, reminiscent of its two years in oak. This beautifully balanced wine makes a happy companion to a lusty steak, a cured Manchego and lush chocolate Rabitos from Spain.
Choice ruby red grapes from across the medieval landscape of Montsant, Catalonia, are carefully selected by the artisan winemaker at Celler los Trovadores. The emerging wine is a ballad of deep cherry red with a nose of robust red fruits, warm spice and minerality. Bright fruits harmonize with toasty round tannins, oak and tobacco for an ideal accompaniment to freshly grilled lamb, Ibérico de Bellota pork, pulpo (octopus) or a hearty fabada bean stew.
LAR DE PAULA CEPAS VIEJAS
An intense, dark cherry red, this Tempranillo by La de Paula sets an entirely new standard. The vineyards are in the heart of Rioja Alavesa and while the grapes grow high above sea level, they are sheltered from the winter chill by the Sierra Cantabria Mountains. Toasty notes of oak casking complement the fruity aftertaste and make a perfect pairing for grilled meats like lamb, beef or the succulent Secreto Ibérico de Bellota.
FIGHTING BULLS - TINTA DE TORO
Uncork your bottle of Fighting Bulls and ready your rib-eye steak - you are in for a treat. This exquisite, limited production Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) is handcrafted by the gifted young winemaker Guillermo Diez Rodriguez. If you ask Guillermo, he’ll tell you Spain’s most powerful red wines can only be made in one place, the heart of Toro. Ask him for his secret to the Fighting Bulls and he’ll take you on a tour of his family’s hundred year old vineyards. Ungrafted, thick, gnarled and surrounded by graphite stones, these low yielding vines are lovingly tended by the Rodriguez family on the banks of the River Duero. The proof of Guillermo’s claims is in the glass. An opaque purple color, this wine stampedes with notes of black fruit, spice and toast for a full-bodied red sensation. Olé!
Celler los Trovadores (Cellar of the Troubadours) was founded with one purpose in mind, to make premium red wines that offer a sense of the place and tell the stories of the lands from which they come. From Montsant’s “Licorella” soils, a warm Mediterranean climate and elevations of nearly 2,300 feet, come lively, floral red wines with deep mineral accents. Sourced from some of the region’s oldest vineyard plots, Gallicant proves there’s something magical about the fruit of centennial vines. One brief swirl and sip and you’ll understand why this wine is our importer’s absolute favorite. But don’t stop there, decant your Gallicant for at least 30 minutes and spend the evening with this storyteller. You’ll find yourself rewarded with rich tales of sweet violets, candied cherries and blueberries, and toasty French oak barrels. Need a companion? Nothing goes better with this aged Montsant than a rack of rosemary-rubbed lamb.
