- A "big" wine with a long finish
- Great introduction to Priorat wines
- Superb value!
TASTING NOTES:
90 Points - "Bright ruby. Dark berry and cherry aromas are a bit reduced initially but open slowly to show suave floral and mineral qualities. Sweet raspberry and blackberry flavors are youthfully exuberant and nicely focused, with no obvious tannins or rough edges. Finishes with pleasant juicy lift and good persistence. This is drinking well right now." - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Issue 139, July/Aug '0889 Points - "The 2004 Los 800 is composed of 82% Garnacha with the balance Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah aged for 6 months in French and American oak. Medium to dark ruby-colored, the bouquet reveals spice box, mineral, cherry, and blueberry. This is followed by a ripe, layered wine with gobs of sweet, savory black cherry and blueberry flavors, excellent concentration, and a lengthy finish. This tasty effort is an excellent introduction to the wines of Priorato. Drink it over the next 5-7 years." - The Wine Advocate, Issue 178, August '08
COMPOSITION: 50% Grenache, 30% Carignan, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah
ABOUT PRIORAT WINES:
Two hours from Barcelona, and a world away, lies the tiny wine region called Priorat. The remote rocky hills produce intense, full reds that many consider to be among Spain's elite wines. The secret is in the slate filled soil, called llicorella in Catalan, and the extreme weather of the region. Grape vines on the roughly 4,000 acres of steep hills suffer hot dry summers and severe cold winters creating low yield grape vines that provide concentrated flavor. The region's innovative winemakers have created a style that has become one of the hottest trends in wine.
This wine has concentrated ripe berry flavors well balanced by mineral taste from the slate soils of the region. It is a "big" wine, great paired with beef, lamb or duck. Aged in oak for 6 months, it has a long finish without harsh tannins. The grapes used are 50% Grenache with the balance Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Overall Los 800 is a great introduction to the wines of Priorat, at a very attractive price.
