Naiades Old Vines Verdejo 2005
Rueda - Rating: 91 - 'Excellent balance..'

$39.00    / WN-121

Quantity:

COMPOSITION: 100% Verdejo grapes.

TASTING NOTES:
"The barrel-fermented 2005 Naiades is sourced from a single parcel of 80- to 100-year-old, ungrafted, Verdejo vines located in La Seca, a village which the locals consider to be the “grand cru” of Rueda. Light gold-colored, it exhibits an attractive perfume of vanilla spice, lemon-lime and honeysuckle. This is followed by a medium-bodied wine with an intense entry, mouth-filling fruit, and excellent balance. Drink this fleshy, tasty effort over the next 12-18 months. 91 Points."

ABOUT THE PRODUCER:
Bodegas Naia is located in the denomination of origin of Rueda, on the southern bank of the Duero River. It is the only D.O. in the Castilian region with a historical tradition of making white wines.

The winery owns 40 hectares (96 acres) around the village of La Seca which is considered by experts the "Grand Cru" of the denomination. Dispersed amongst the vineyards are 5 hectares of ungrafted pre-phylloxera Verdejo vines in sandy soils; the average age of these vines is 90 years, with many of the vines over 100 years of age. The vineyards are situated on alluvial soils which are sediments of the ancient riverbed of the Duero. The soils are characterized by a top layer of gravel 2 meters deep that sits on a layer of clay.

The climate is Continental, with cold winters and hot summers with large temperature fluctuations between day and night during the growing season. There is scant rainfall in this semi-arid region.

The famous winemaker, Eulogio Calleja, uses a blend of 50% Verdejo and 50% Viura/Sauvignon Blanc to make Las Brisas. Naia is 100% Verdejo which is aged sur lie for 4 months to accentuate the characteristics of the varietal. Naiades is crafted from the oldest ungrafted vines of Verdejo and aged for 8 months in French oak.  (less info)
