In the historic seaside sherry town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, there is a long tradition of gathering at seafood restaurants next to the beach to enjoy a glass of dry manzanilla wine and platters of shellfish harvested that day in the Bay of Cádiz.
Quite a few of the historic cafes along the Bajo de Guía employ wine barrels to serve as handy tables for tapas such as their town’s legendary langostinos.
Refreshed by the gentle breezes, with a glass of wine or a caña of beer in hand, it is an idyllic setting of grace, as friends enjoy an informal time of relaxation.
One of the finest brands of manzanilla wine is La Gitana. Their beautiful old bodega sits very near to the ocean with the windows open. This allows the moderate sea air to keep the bodega fresh and moist. Some say you can even taste a bit of sea brine in their wines.
For practical reasons, our barrels are smaller than the giant barrels aging manzanilla at the Hidalgo bodega. They are the size used to dispense wine to customers in the local wine shop.
When we lived in one of the sherry towns of Spain we used to bring empty bottles to the shop to replenish with wine dispensed from a barrel such as this. Some of you have seen barrels such as these symmetrically stacked outside a bodega.
