Regarded as the unofficial symbol of Spain, these black beasts tower over hillsides and countrysides around the region. Their storied past dates back to the 1950s when clever advertisers enlisted the bull as a marketing tool for an Andalusian brandy company. In lieu of billboards, they branded black, wooden bulls stood. Their popularity quickly grew and soon their numbers climbed to the hundreds and their wooden stature was traded in for metal to withstand weather.
In the 1990s, changes in roadside advertising laws threatened to bench the bulls for good, but when the public got word of the news, there was an outcry. The bulls had become as much a part of the roadside as the roads themselves. Alas, the bulls were able to remain but would need to move 150 meters from thoroughfares to comply with the laws. To compensate for the change, they grew 12 meters in height and 4000 kilograms in weight and still stand in select locations throughout Spain.
