The Osborne bull is a beloved and unofficial symbol of Spain. Their story began in 1956 as part of an advertising campaign for Osborne Brandy de Jerez. To create a buzz, 16 branded, wooden bulls were placed on roadsides in lieu of billboards. Quite a hit, they began to take on a life of their own. Soon hundreds graced the roadways of Spain.
The 1990s brought with them a new set of laws for advertising along the thoroughfares. This would have been the end of the popular black silhouettes if it had not been for the public outcry at the possibility of losing these pieces of nostalgia and symbolism. As a compromise, the Osborne bulls were moved further back from the road to comply with the laws. So as not to be missed, they grew in stature by 12 meters and 4000 kilograms. You can still spot 89 of these massive metal black beasts today perched along the hillsides and countryside of Spain.
