Produced entirely with Royal olives, Castillo de Canena's First Early Royal extra virgin olive oil is literally the only olive oil of its kind in the world. The Royal olive is a very old variety that is now nearly nonexistent and very difficult to cultivate. Castillo de Canena harvests their Royal olive grove early, resulting in this intensely flavored and rare extra virgin olive oil. Although the early harvest yields less oil than the regular harvest, the result is magnificent. The First Early Royal oil is an intense green color with notes of artichoke, banana and fresh grass. Smooth and fruity, it has no bitterness and a moderate peppery finish.
The Royal olive is an ancient variety native to Andalucia. Because of difficulties in harvesting and its low oil yield, Royal olives were on the brink of extinction until Castillo de Canena rescued them from a small grove in the mountains and re-planted them on their own estate. Because the Royal olive is so rare and yields so little oil, production of this oil is limited to 4,000 bottles per year.
Castillo De Canena olive oils are produced by the renowned Vañó family in Andalusia. For centuries, the Vañó family has produced olive oil at their 16th century castle in the foothills of the Sierra Mágina. The company takes its name from the castle itself.
Castillo de Canena carefully supervises their olive groves and hand selects olives at the peak time for producing olive oil with the perfect balance of aroma and flavor.
