Sweet and smoky Huerto Azul fig chutney is made in Chile with coarsely chopped fresh figs and a touch of merken spice. Merken is a Chilean spice made with smoky chili peppers and coriander seeds. The unexpected combination of sweet figs and merken spice makes this thick sauce a delightful addition to a variety of cheese or meat dishes.
This fig and merken chutney is great as an accompaniment on a pâté platter or with your favorite cheese. Sweet yet delicately smoky, it is a wonderful sauce for baked or grilled chicken or a spread for a loaf of crusty, freshly baked bread.
Made by Huerto Azul, or 'Blue Orchard', a small Chilean company that began making their jams and preserves only for the consumption of family and friends. The name Huerto Azul stems from the crystal blue waters, fresh air and blue sunsets of Southern Chile.
About 10 years ago, they opened an artisan factory and began selling their products to local shops in Villarrica and Pucon, Chile. Still handmade using traditional recipes, Huerto Azul jams are available in limited quantities in the United States.
