Afuega'l Pitu Rustic Cheese 10 oz - Rarely found outside Asturias $19.95 / CS-62
Afuega’l Pitu is one of oldest of over three dozen cheeses made in the mountainous region of Asturias. We find this a real hidden delight. It is such a pleasure to unwrap the hand made purse shaped bundle, and spread the delightful soft cheese on crackers. Better yet, get some wonderfully crusty bread and serve with chorizo and perhaps a bottle of the wines of El Bierzo. There is no cheese more remote from modern commercialism. It is rarely found outside of Asturias, the rugged ancient kingdom of northern Spain. Totally hand made in production, rustic Afuega’l Pitu tastes a bit like goat’s milk cheese, even though it's made from milk of Frisian cows (more info)

We find it a fascinating cheese: it appears to be a fresh cheese but soon you discover it has so much more to offer. Nutty and a bit piquant – it almost has citrus overtones. Afuega'l Pitu is white if recently made, but becomes ivory colored as it cures longer. The taste is creamy and tending toward acidic, with a very distinct aroma. (less info) |
