La Estepeña started in 1858 as an artisan confectionery in the small town of Estepa, along the stagecoach route from Sevilla to Malaga. Over the past 150 years, its reputation has grown until La Estepeña is now known throughout Spain as one of the finest producers of mantecados and polvorones.
Mantecados and polvorones are a traditional Christmas treat, to be enjoyed with family and friends during the holidays. We enjoy them year round, as a tasty cookie to enjoy with coffee in the afternoon or after a nice Spanish meal.
Polvorones and mantecados are still produced in the traditional cycle. In September, when the first truckloads of freshly picked almonds arrive in town, the local townspeople stop their regular daily routine and take a few weeks to work making these artisan cookies for the coming Christmas season – just as their parents and grand parents did in years past.

"These cookies are gorgeous and worth their weight in gold! I first tried polverones in a Spanish shop when I lived in Zurich,and immediately fell in love with them. They have an indescribable toasted nutty taste that I found unusual in any other cookie that I have eaten in the past,and a pleasing crumbly texture. These mantecados in particular are made with olive oil,so its perfect for vegetarians like me. I very highly recommend them to anyone who wants an exotic taste of Spanish confection! Formidable!"
