Polvorones are delectable crumbly almond cookies from Estepa, in Andalucia. In Spanish 'polvo' literally means powder, and refers to the little cookies made with crumbled toasted almonds and flour baked with a touch of lemon. Then the townspeople wrap each little cookie by hand in tissue paper.
Many Spaniards crush the cake in the wrapper before unwrapping. Others let it crumble in their mouths! Either way they are a sweet, rich confection - a traditional Christmas treat throughout all of Spain, but enjoyable throughout the year.
Our provider, La Estepeña, is a renowned company which started in 1858 as an artisanal confectionary in the small town of Estepa, along the stagecoach route from Sevilla to Malaga.
Over the past 150 years, its reputation has grown until it is recognized throughout Spain as the standard against which all other classic Christmas confections are compared. To this day, the production remains under the supervision of the latest generation of the people of Estepa. In September, when the people hear the sound of the first truckload of freshly picked almonds pulling into town they drop what they are doing and as one, head for the production area - just as their parents and grandparents did.

"My daughter studied in Spain last year and our whole family was there for Christmas 2008. One of our favorite treats was polvarones. So I ordered these to surprise my daughter for Christmas. We ALL loved them. They have a hint of lemon, that ones we ate in Spain did not have, and the powdered sugar coating had mostly be absorbed by the cookie itself. Overall, we really enjoyed them. "
