Premium Tarta de Santiago Cake

Tarta de Santiago is a famous cake from the pilgrimage town, Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. Made from crushed almonds, eggs and sugar, this cake is a rich taste of an ancient tradition. For us, each bite brings back memories of breakfast in the granite squares of the medieval city, where so many people have enjoyed this delightful confection!

This cake is named after Santiago, or St. James, the patron saint of Spain whose remains are buried in Santiago de Compostela. People from all across Europe have made pilgrimages there since the Middle Ages, and it carries religious and historical significance today.

While pilgrims don’t come to Santiago just for the cake, it’s a delicious reward for their journey. You can find it in bakeries all over the medieval city, where its name and provenance are protected by Spanish law!

Skillful bakers mix Spanish almonds, eggs, sugar and a touch of lemon peel together. When the cake is fresh out of the oven, they sprinkle it with confectioners sugar to form a sword-shaped cross of St. James.

Served at breakfast with a rich cup of coffee or for dessert with espresso, it’s a lovely taste of Spanish tradition. Sometimes, we even save it for dessert with a glass of Pedro Ximenez sherry!
